Choosing the right C++ container for your use case

This is an easy practice question that tests your working knowledge of C++ standard library containers and their performance characteristics. It's the kind of foundational question interviewers ask to confirm you understand when to reach for vector, map, unordered_map, set, deque, or other structures—not just that you know they exist.

Answering well means reasoning about the access patterns, insertion and deletion frequency, and memory layout requirements implied by the code. In a production or interview setting, picking the wrong container can silently tank performance or introduce subtle bugs, so interviewers want to see that you think through trade-offs: lookup speed versus iteration order, cache locality versus dynamic resizing, and whether you need uniqueness or multiple copies of the same value.
