Understanding nonblocking socket connection behaviour
This is an easy systems-level question about how operating systems handle nonblocking socket operations. It tests whether you understand the distinction between synchronous and asynchronous connection semantics, and how to interpret the signals that the kernel sends back to your code.
When a socket is set to nonblocking mode, the behaviour of network calls changes fundamentally. Instead of waiting for an operation to complete, the kernel returns immediately with a status code. Recognising which error codes signal completion versus which ones indicate that an operation is still in progress is essential for writing responsive network applications, especially in low-latency systems where blocking is not an option.
